Versatility Award 

Established July 21, 1992

ASC offers a Versatility Award to members in good standing who have a Flushing Spaniel achieving at least three titles at AKC authorized events in the following categories:

a. Breed Conformation (CH – Champion)
b. Obedience/Rally (CD – Companion Dog,, RAE – Rally Advanced Excellent)
c. Field Trial
d. Hunting Test (JH – Junior Hunter)
e. Tracking (TD – Tracking Dog)
f. Agility (NA – Novice Agility, Standard Class)

Earning three titles out of the six listed is necessary — one title must be a conformation championship, one title must be in either obedience/rally or agility and one title must be in either field, hunting, or tracking. During the time the titles were earned, the Flushing Spaniel must have been owned by a member of the club. Titles may not be transferred or included for the Versatility Award by a new owner-member.  The award is a plaque with a plate engraved with the name of the flushing spaniel and the three titles with year of title. Only one plaque will be furnished by the club.  Additional plaques for co-owners or for a Performance Versatility Award may be purchased by the member.

Copies of the AKC Registration and AKC Title Certificates must be submitted to Versatility Award Chair, Jeanne Grim, DVM, by November 1. Jeanne’s contact information is skiboos@bellsouth.net.  The Versatility Award or the Performance Versatility Award is presented at the January ASC Annual Meeting .

Performance Versatility Award

ASC offers a  Performance Versatility Award  to each of its members in good standing who have a Flushing Spaniel achieving a title of at an AKC-authorized event in the following categories:

  • Obedience
  • Agility
  • Field
  • Hunting
  • Tracking

Titles in three out of the five areas listed are necessary (minimum titles in parentheses) and one MUST be an obedience title (CD -Companion Dog), one MUST be an agility title (NA/NAP – Novice Agility, Standard Class, Regular or Preferred), and one MUST be either a field title, a hunting title (JH - Junior Hunter), or a tracking title (TD – Tracking Dog).

The award is given to the member applying and submitting:

  1. Copy of AKC Registration certificate
  2. Copy of AKC Obedience Title certificate
  3. Copy of AKC Agility Title certificate
  4. Copy of one other AKC Title certificate from list

Versatile Companion and Versatile Companion Excellent Awards

Award RULES

At the time of submission, the person applying for a versatility award must be both an ASC member in good standing and an owner of the dog. A minimum of 3 titles must be earned while the owner is a member of the American Spaniel Club.

All requirements must be met by December 31 of the year prior to award.

Submission of versatility applications *&* PROOF of all pertinent titles must be received by the Versatility Statistician by January 31 via email or photocopy and postal mail, so that they can be verified, and the award confirmed.

Versatility Certificates will be presented at the Cocker Spaniel National Specialty in July.

If owners are not in attendance, certificates may be mailed to the owners at owner’s expense.

New Versatility Awards will be publicly recognized in the ASC Bulletin.

Versatility Applications for cocker spaniels meeting the requirements, may be submitted posthumously.

Any titles not currently recognized on the Versatility Schedule may be reviewed by the versatility committee, per request by the applicant.

  8. Miscellaneous: Includes any AKC recognized venue such as CGC, Trick Dog, Farm Dog, Temperament, FastCAT/Coursing, Barn Hunt, Dock Diving and Flyball, where titles are recognized by AKC, or the venue does not require multiple passes under multiple judges for a title.

Restrictions on the number of titles counted:

  1. Titles must be earned to count. This restriction applies to hunting where dogs may be started at any level.
  2. in venues like agility and obedience with regular and preferred title tracks, equivalent titles in the two tracks will not be counted. For example, if a dog has earned an NA and an NAP in agility or a CD and a PCD in obedience, only one of these titles will be counted toward a versatility award from agility and obedience respectively.
  3. Instinct titles, like RATI, ACT are not acceptable to qualify for versatility awards.

VC – VERSATILE COMPANION

  • A minimum of 5 titles from at least 3 venues
  • No restrictions on the number of titles/venue

VCX – VERSATILE COMPANION EXCELLENT

  •  A minimum of 10 titles from at least 4 venues
  • Prerequisite of a VC
  • Maximum of 5 titles per venue may be counted.
  • Maximum of 2 titles from the Miscellaneous Group
  • At least two title levels must be earned in each of three venues (ex:  NA, OA or SCN, SCA)
